BEHIND THE SOUND

Iva Zabkar is an Austrian award winning score composer and sound designer who was born in Zagreb, Croatia but grew up in Austria.

Iva has created music for several feature movies as “Kuma” directed by Umut Dag/Wega Film, “Womit haben wir das verdient" directed by Eva Spreitzhofer/Mona Film, TV Series as “Tatort – Sonnenwende” directed by Umut Dag/SWR, “Landkrimi – Endabrechnung” directed by Umut Dag/ORF, Allegro Film, ads as “WWF – Nonoy” directed by Michael Rittmannsberger/Wildruf, “Caritas – Welt retten” directed by Patrick Vollrath/Das Rund and dozens of theatrical shorts as “Abgestempelt” directed by Michael Rittmannsberger.

The projects she was working on have travelled every continent, picking up numerous awards along the way. Her debut for the most popular TV Series in Germany "Tatort - Rebecca” (SWR; directed by Umut Dag) - reached almost 11m viewers on german speaking primetime TV (Germany/Austria/Switzerland).

Her gentle and sensitive work always tries to support a better expressing of the scene, the particular situation or the characters emotional state of mind. Her sound is often influenced by ambient music, likes being minimalistic but emotional, always reaching out to complete the rest of the sound layers sound wise. She loves to combine real instruments with any kind of electronically sounds, field recordings or folkloristic elements. In 2018 she worked her first feature comedy, which brought a whole new style into her composing repertoire.

Iva is also a member of faculty at Popakademie/JSBM-Musikschule. She teaches piano and directed music workshops in cooperation with mumok, Vienna. She also takes great joy in creating electronic music. Therefore she works as producer for the female artpop project "iNANA" (with singer songwriter Nina Braith) or creates tracks or remixes for/with her side projects "soundfootage" and "kotomaki" (with doktor audio). In 2021 she will release her first ever Solo Album.

Last but not least, she is one of the co-founder of the all female composers collective "track15" and Viennese music label/collective "Beatzarilla", who wants to encourage and boost female producers and female artists working with music based on Electronic, Hip Hop or other beat-focused genres.

She studied applied composing and instrumental pedagogy at University of Music and Performing Arts in her hometown Vienna, Austria where she also currently lives and works.
